Don’t Break the Bank with Your Home Renovation

Because times are tough economically, many families have decided not to modernize their house because it’s too costly. If you’re in that same situation, be assured that you can update your surroundings with a few enhancements without spending an arm and a leg in the process.

Make a Dramatic Change and Spend Less

Begin with fundamentals when considering a home rehab project. Start from the top of the room and work your way down. This is the first step in your home rehab project. If you have bumpy and texturized, consider either repainting it a crisp, white color or hiring someone to remove and replace it it with a smooth pattern. Don’t forget to paint on a high-grade primer before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and select neutral tones that will flatter open and airy tones and will go with any designs and decorations. Patch holes and dents in the walls to give the home a finished look. Next, move on to the floors: are the baseboards and flooring in fair condition? If they are, re-paint the baseboards a nice white color to give the home a new and updated look. If you plan to tear out and lay new coverings on the floors, consider stone tiles, because they are affordable per square foot and stay looking new much longer than carpet does. If you will be installing carpeting, choose a thick pile that is somewhere between brown and beige so that stains will not be as visible and the carpet will resist crushing for many years.

Kitchens and Bathrooms are Key

Renewing your kitchen and bathrooms are the smartest upgrades you can put into your living quarters. If the cabinetry is structurally sound, consider either restaining the existing cabinets or buying new doors. If you will be refacing them, get a good cordless drill and remove the hardware from the cabinet doors to release them. If needed, new doors can be purchased from your local hardware store. For an even better money-saving renovation, choose to refinish the existing cabinets. Again, detach the doors from the cabinets and then apply a paint stripper to the existing finish and use a scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all of the finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the first time with a Bosch sander using medium-grade sandpaper. A last sanding should be done with a fine-grade sandpaper after that. Remove all of the wood dust and then spread a wood conditioner to the cabinets. To conclude, stain or paint the wood and finish it with 2-3 clear coats to protect the finished product from exposure to moisture.

Upgrading Your Furniture

Modernizing your decorative items is a simple, but dramatic way to make your living quarters look like new. You can find great deals at yard sales, discount design stores, and online which will save money. For even better savings, create your own piece of furniture. You can make a unique headboard, for example, with nothing more than two extra-large posts of wood, a lathe machine (you can borrow this from someone), and a large rectangle of board made of wood. Cover the wood centerpiece with some batting, fabric, and modern upholstery pins for a new headboard that is truly stunning!

Maybe you have just purchased a fixer-upper or are looking for ways to upgrade your existing home with as little cost as possible. Either way, these helpful hints for getting the most out of your home will help your living quarters look like new without spending a ton of dough in the process.
