What are The Various Forms of Electricity Producing Solar Systems?
Once you have built your solar panel array. We then design a system to make best use of the solar power they produce. There are a number of ways of doing this. We can use a battery, push the electricity back to the national grid, or we can power our homes. Before you start anything though, have it fixed in your mind’s eye exactly what it is you want to end up with. Make sure you design a system that will satisfy all your energy requirements.
Transportable Solar Powered Generators
This is the simplest of all the systems. All you need is an inverter, charge controller, a battery and your PV solar panel.
You don’t have to build all your solar panels before you install a system in your home. You can add more solar panels as and when they are available. The solar panel produces DC current. This needs to be converted to an AC current which is the job of the inverter.
Should you produce more electricity than you use then the excess electricity can be stored in deep cycle batteries. Do not use standard auto battery, use a deep cycle battery.
Solar Power For a Grid Tied Home
If you are connected to the national electricity grid then you should definitely consider this system. In this system, you do not use batteries, you feed all unused electricity back to your utility supplier network. This has the effect of reversing your meter and so your electric utility supplier will credit you on your bill.
After you build a solar panel, you will appreciate how easy they are to make. Let’s say you build a solar panel a week and over a year you built 40 of them. You will be sending so much electricity back to the grid, that you can make a nice little income on-the-side to supplement all your other household bills.
Grid Tied Generator + Battery bank
To add more security to your power supply, you may want to consider having a battery bank to go with your grid tied system. Should you have a cloudy day, or at night when you are generating no power, what do you do then? The battery system will store any previously unused electricity and so instead of tapping power from the grid you use your batteries.
Generate Solar Power With Off-Grid Homes
If you live in part of the world where you have no direct electricity to your home then having a battery bank may prove very beneficial. And by having a battery back-up you will not have wasted any power you may have generated and not used.
Batteries perform better when they are warm so it is wise to invest in a battery box and keep them in your garage. A battery box is also a good health and safety feature, especially if you have children or animals running around. Just imagine if your dog peed up against a battery, or perhaps not!
You may already have a generator to power your home. If you do, I suggest you connect this to your system as well, it can charge your batteries should they start to go flat.
Different Types of Solar Powered Systems For the Home
- Grid tied system without a battery bank
- Portable solar power pack
- Grid tied systems
- Off grid with just a battery backup
- Off grid setup + generator + battery bank
