Sustainable Construction Gaining Ground at Mar Vista Costa Rica
The concept of Green Construction can be traced to the energy crisis and the environment pollution concern in the 1970s. The green building movement in the U.S. Originated from the need and wish for more energy efficient and green construction practices. There are a number of motivations for Green Construction, including environmental, business, and social benefits. However, modern supportability initiatives call for an integrated and synergistic design to both new construction and in the retrofitting of an existing structure. Sometimes called tolerable design, this approach integrates the building life-cycle with each green practice employed with a design-purpose to create a synergy amongst the practices used.
Green building brings together a vast choice of practices and systems to reduce and ultimately lose the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. It often emphasises using replaceable resources, e.g, using daylight through passive solar, active solar, and photovoltaic strategies and using plants and trees through green roofs, rain gardens, and for reduction of rainwater run-off. Plenty of other techniques, eg using packed gravel or permeable concrete instead of typical concrete or asphalt to enhance replenishment of ground water, are employed as well.
While the practices, or technologies, employed in green building are consistently developing and may vary from region to area, there are elemental beliefs that endure from which the system is derived: Siting and Structure Design Potency, Energy Efficiency, Water Potency, Materials Potency, Indoor Environmental Quality Enhancement, Operations and Upkeep Optimisation, and Waste and Toxics Reduction. The quintessence of green building is an optimisation of several of these beliefs. Also, with the right synergistic design, individual green building technologies may work in cooperation to produce a larger cumulative effect.
On the cultured side of green design or sustainable design is the philosophy of planning a building that’s in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site. There are many main steps in planning sustainable buildings: specify’green’ building materials from local sources, reduce loads, optimize systems, and generate on-site eco-friendly power.
